Over the last week or so, several stories appeared in the papers about houses being burnt down sadly leaving victims homeless over the festive season.
On the second day of Raya, three houses were almost completely destroyed in a severe blaze in Kg Dato Gandhi, a small village along Jln Kota Batu. A total of 15 locals and 15 foreigners were made homeless by the fire which was believed to have started in one of the rooms of the houses. In another incident, which was reported around 10.30 am in Kg Anggerek Desa on Thursday, the home of a family on vacation was destroyed in an abrupt blaze.
In today’s Brunei Times, “a group of eight Bangladeshi workers were left with virtually nothing but the clothes on their backs and uncertainty over where they will stay this Hari Raya after their home in Kg Lambak was razed by a fire early yesterday morning. Even the thousands of dollars that the technicians had saved were reduced to ashes and melted pieces of plastic. Some $70,000 in property, which included damage to two cars, were estimated to be lost as a result of the fire, according to the Fire and Rescue Department.”
Could this have been prevented? The answer is YES. For as little as a B$135.00 investment, a smoke detector could have alerted the residents of the fire much earlier, and they would have had a fire blanket to throw over the flame and also a fire extinguisher to douse the flames before it got out of hand.
